Penny Skateboards

Everyday Perfume

For a university case study, we were asked to pick a company that does not offer perfumes and create a perfume with its fitting perfume bottle. The challenge was to identify the brand and create a product that fits seamlessly into their identity. I chose Penny Skateboards due to their vibrant colours and fun personality

Understanding the brand

To understand the brand, two mood boards were created. The first one was to capture the feeling of both adventure and summer, while also encompassing the sense of introspection. The second board focused more on material and shapes and colour of the brand.

Initial Sketching

After creating mood boards, brand pyramids, and mixer boards in order to capture the brand identity, an initial sketching session was held. The focus was on exploring different types of shapes and forms and what said forms convey to a user. What associations do they have?

Scent

The main goal was to create a scent which reminded you of summer adventures and the ocean. The result was a very soft scent; a flowery and scent with hints of lemon. Underneath it all, a smell of the ocean, sea salt in particular, acted as a gentle base.

Round 1

Eventually, the first concepts emerged. Initially, the rocket was the favourite and the winning concept. However, after taking a second look, I realised it looks very similar to their skateboards which felt very obvious.

Round 2

Taking what I had learned from previous steps, a second round of ideation took form, this time playing more with the three dimensions.

Last touches

Once the shape had been established, I knew I wanted to add a colourful plastic part, as that is integral to the brand identity. After playing around with shapes and colours, a final product emerged
